For a 7 to 10 day ride, pack 40 to 55 litres of luggage on the bike, wear a light 5 to 10L hydration pack, and leave the big backpack, denim and single-use plastic at home. That is the whole Leh Ladakh bike trip packing list in one line.
The detail matters. Ladakh has 300 km stretches without petrol, passes above 5,000 metres, and since June 2026, fines for banned plastic. Below: a checklist table, a luggage plan in litres, and what to leave behind.

How Much Luggage Do You Need for a Ladakh Bike Trip?
Less than you think. Think in three positions: the tail takes bulky, light clothes; the sides take heavy tools, packed low; the tank bag holds what you reach for hourly. Keep weight low and centred and the bike stays stable on gravel.
| Trip type | Total luggage | Suggested setup |
|---|---|---|
| 5 to 7 days, solo | 30 to 40L | 30L tail bag, 5L tank bag, small hydration pack |
| 8 to 12 days, solo | 40 to 55L | 30L tail bag, pair of 10L side bags, 5L tank bag |
| 8 to 12 days, two-up | 55 to 70L | 20L saddle bag each side, 20 to 30L tail bag, tank bag |
Roll-top bags beat zips for dust and water crossings. See waterproof vs water-resistant explained.
Should You Ride Ladakh With a Backpack?
A large, loaded backpack is a poor choice for a Ladakh bike trip. Eight to ten hours a day on rough roads loads your shoulders and lower back, and fatigue builds by day three. Move the bulk to the bike and wear only a small 5 to 10L hydration pack for water, phone, permit copies and one warm layer.
Read how a motorcycle backpack should fit and whether it's safe to ride with a backpack at all.
Packing for a Rented Bike With No Luggage Rack
Rental bikes in Leh and Manali rarely have racks, so skip hard panniers. Use soft roll-top bags that strap to the frame, crash guard or saree guard. The SealPac 6-in-1 waterproof motorcycle bag mounts this way in about two minutes with no tools.
Riding Gear and Clothing Layers
Wear your protection: armoured jacket and pants, full-gauntlet gloves plus a waterproof pair, boots, a balaclava and sunglasses.
Pack layers, not one heavy jacket. Two sets of thermals, a fleece, a rain shell, quick-dry tees and wool socks cover the season, because temperatures swing hard between valley and pass. Denim is the classic mistake. Slow to dry, freezing when wet.
Documents, Cash and Connectivity (2026 Rules)
Carry your licence, RC, insurance, PUC and photo ID, plus phone copies. Indian tourists no longer need an Inner Line Permit. You register and pay an environment fee on the official LAHDC permit portal, then carry printed receipts for checkposts on the Nubra, Pangong and Tso Moriri routes.
ATMs are concentrated in Leh, so carry cash for fuel and homestays, split across two bags. Only postpaid SIMs from outside the region work; prepaid ones won't. Download offline maps.
Tools, Spares and Fuel
Pack the toolkit, puncture kit or spare tubes, chain lube, clutch and accelerator cables, fuses, cable ties, duct tape and a tow rope. Tools go low in a side bag, never in a backpack.
Fuel is where plans fail. The Manali to Leh highway has no pump for roughly 323 km between Keylong and Karu. Fill up everywhere, and carry a jerry can for the Changthang loop to Hanle and Tso Moriri. Leh to Nubra or Pangong round trips don't need spare fuel.
Hydration and Altitude Kit
Riders forget to drink in the cold, and Leh sits at about 3,500 metres. A 2L bladder you sip while riding beats digging out a bottle. The Flux 10L hydration backpack carries one plus a layer and documents. Compare the best hydration backpacks for long rides.
Pack a first-aid box, pulse oximeter, ORS, high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm. Ask your doctor about altitude medicine, and spend one or two days in Leh before the high passes.
What to Leave Behind
- Single-use plastic. Ladakh banned identified single-use plastic items in June 2026, with a ₹10,000 fine for any individual and ₹5,000 for littering, according to the Ladakh administration. Carry a steel bottle or a bladder.
- A large travel backpack. Your back will thank you.
- Hard panniers on a rental. They need racks the bike won't have.
- Denim and heavy cotton.
- Full-size toiletries. Decant into small bottles.
- Extra gadgets, excess cash and jewellery.

Frequently Asked Questions
